'Them Are Us Too's' 'Cash Askew' Among Oakland Warehouse Victims

(RADIO.COM) – The Oakland warehouse fire from December 2 has shocked the California city's artistic community and stunned the public as the death toll climbs and more grim details surface about what happened. Among the victims is Cash Askew, a founder of Them Are Us Too, a dream-pop band signed to the independent Dais Records label. The company confirmed her death in a statement.
"We will never be the same. Completely devastated by the loss of Cash Askew," the label said. "She was one of the most talented and loving people we've ever known. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts, along with all those lost in the Oakland tragedy."
The fire occurred in an artists' space (known as the Ghost Ship) where visual, musical and performance artists were said to gather and collaborate. Survivors describe it as a living and working space that drew artists from all over. The latest update from Oakland authorities places the death toll at 33, with 70 percent of the building yet to be searched.
The band's official Facebook page also includes a tribute post, a photo of Askew bearing the caption "forever."
Friends of Askew's family have also set up a YouCaring.com fundraising campaign to help support the parents during their time of grief. There is also an associated LotsaHelpingHands.com campaign aimed at providing the family with meals and community support in the wake of their loss.
