Green Day's Armstrong Attends Oakland Fire Vigil
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong showed how he has stayed true to his Oakland roots Monday night, attending the Lake Merritt vigil for the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire.
A crowd that was estimated at over 1,000 people came to the vigil at Lake Merritt Monday to remember and pay tribute to friends and family among the 36 lives lost in the fire at the underground dance party Friday night.
Armstrong posted a photo on Instagram of candles laid out along the edge of Lake Merritt at about 11:30 p.m. late Monday evening.
He included a heartfelt message about his time living "in warehouses and communal spaces like Ghost ship," celebrating the kind of spaces that "allowed the strange ones to thrive and be the people that normal society rejects."
Armstrong continued, stating in the post "this tragedy hits close to all of our hearts. please do what you can to help heal this intense loss," before closing with the hopeful words, "let's take care of each other.
Armstrong andGreen Day are scheduled to headline Night Two of LIVE 105's Not So Silent this Saturday at Oracle Arena. Given the singer's history of speaking his mind from the stage -- last month, he and the band broke into an anti-Trump chant during their performances at the American Music Awards -- Armstrong will likely address the tragedy during their show in Oakland
