Crews Recover Body Of Man Seen Drowning In Vacaville Irrigation Canal
VACAVILLE (CBS SF) -- A search for a man who was seen drowning and yelling for help Saturday morning in an irrigation canal in Vacaville ended after rescue crews located and recovered his body, according to a Vacaville police spokesman.
The incident began around 7 a.m., when officers received calls regarding a person who was yelling for help and who appeared to be drowning in a Solano Irrigation District canal behind Persimmon Circle, police spokesman Officer Chris Lechuga said.
One of the callers tried to help the man to no avail.
Rescue crews then responded to the nearby 2100 block of Alamo Drive, where there is a gated entrance to the canal. By that time, the victim had fully submerged into the 10-feet deep water and crews were unable to locate him, according to Lechuga.
At around 9:30 a.m., the rescue effort had moved to the 700 block of Foxboro Parkway. Crews were again unable to locate the victim.
A California Highway Patrol aircraft also responded in addition to a Solano County drive team equipped with sonar.
By about 1:55 p.m., crews located the man's body in the canal, near where he was initially seen drowning near the 2100 block of Alamo Drive, Lechuga said.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of his next of kin, according to Lechuga.
