Toddler Girl Fights For Her Life After East Oakland Shooting

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Authorities in Oakland are on the scene of a Thursday afternoon shooting that left a 22-month-old girl critically injured, according to police.

The shooting happened at about noon near the intersection of 65th Avenue and Outlook in the neighborhood south of Mills College.

Police initially confirmed that the toddler was a three-year-old little girl, but later corrected her age to 22 months old.

The girl was shot in chest. She is in critical but stable condition, according to authorities.

Neighbors in the residential community heard the commotion.

"I think it was maybe four gunshots, then a pause then another three or four gunshots," said neighbor Clare Stanley. "I heard car speed away. I heard shots and then the car squealing away"

Oakland police said the shooter fired several rounds near 66th avenue and outlook. Investigators said a stray round struck the 22-month-old girl who was in the car with her mother.

"We are trying to determine if the car was parked at the time of the shooting or if it was moving," said Oakland police spokesperson Johnna Watson.

After the girl was hit, her mother drover her to Highland Hospital, according to authorities. She was then transferred by ambulance to Oakland Children's Hospital. Police collected evidence from the vehicle at Highland.

A police source told KPIX 5 Thursday's shooting could be connected to a homicide that happened Wednesday afternoon on Myrtle.

"Currently investigators are looking into seeing if those two are related, at this time we cannot confirm that," said Watson.

That shooting occurred at 1:16 p.m. in the 900 block of 16th Street, about one block from West Oakland Middle School and Lafayette Elementary School.

The victim died at the scene. Police said they do not have any suspects in the Wednesday homicide.

Family members confirmed the young girl remained in stable condition early Thursday evening.

Oakland police remained on the scene investigating the incident into the evening. Authorities have asked that anyone who saw the incident or has information regarding the shooting get in touch immediately.
