Sniper Who Fired On Oakland Officers Dies In Hospital

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Police have identified the man who triggered a tense standoff with police after firing a high-powered rifle at officers and residents near Bishop O'Dowd High School Friday morning as Oakland resident Jesse Enjaian.

An Oakland police officer shot Enjaian, who had been firing on residents as well as officers responding to the incident.

He was transported to a hospital and listed in serious condition, but police issued a statement at 8:14 p.m. confirming that the shooter had succumbed to his injuries

Police said that Enjaian lived at 9512 Las Vegas Ave in Oakland, the location where the standoff took place. He was a 2008 alum of UCLA and a 2013 alum of University of Michigan Law School.

Enjaian was the co-founder and computer engineer at the computer company Oakland Microsystems.

Police sources confirmed to KPIX 5 that officers had responded to Enjaian's house earlier this week regarding either threats or a report of a gun.

The tense situation came to an end shortly before 10 a.m. when the suspect was arrested and hospitalized after being shot, police said.

The California Highway Patrol said the gunman had been "disarmed and detained" and helicopter video showed him being loaded into an ambulance.

Oakland police said later that Enjaian was in serious condition.

The bizarre standoff began after a report of a sniper armed with a rifle and scope being spotted near Golf Links Drive and 98th Ave. around 9 a.m. The eastbound lanes of nearby Interstate Highway 580 were immediately shut down.

Police quickly rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. The gunman was clearly seen in helicopter video shooting out a window of a home on Las Vegas Avenue located near the high school which was on lock down.

The gunman then exited the home, spray-painted eyes on a neighbor's garage and also spray-painted a white car on the street.

He then walked into the backyard, fired shots toward a fence and then the helicopter.

The man had been shooting at residents and parked cars and fired on Oakland police officers as they arrived, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.

No injuries were reported.

Some rounds fired toward officers struck the ground near them, so they took cover and retreated. They called for all available officers and brought in an armored vehicle for protection.

An Oakland Police Department source who was at the scene told KPIX 5 that an OPD Sergeant shot the suspect. The source confirmed the suspect was hit in the arm, but the bullet continued and struck him in the chest cavity. The suspect was also hit in the ankle.

As of about 10 a.m., CHP officials said the highway had reopened.

"This is extremely concerning for the Oakland police Department," Watson said. "We have a lot of traffic that comes through the area we also have a lot of schools in the area."

The area of 98th and Las Vegas avenues including the on and off ramps to I-580 remained closed for several hours as police investigated the incident.

Police said they don't have a motive, don't know what set the man off and are unsure what his mental state was.
