Base Jumpers Arrested After Leap From San Francisco Hilton
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Two suspected base jumpers were arrested late Tuesday after they allegedly leaped off the roof of the 493-foot San Francisco Hilton hotel near Union Square, authorities said.
San Francisco police said officers watched the three base jumper landing with parachutes on their backs in the 300 block of Jones Street at 11:35 p.m.
"There were some officers on patrol, and they observed people descending from sky with parachutes and they ended up landing near their patrol car," said SFPD Officer Giselle Talkoff.
Two male jumpers were quickly taken into custody and their gear seized. A third jumper -- described as a white female -- was able to elude police and remains at large.
The suspects were later identified as 25-year-old San Francisco resident Brendan Weinstein and 26-year-old South San Francisco resident Joshua Glovac. The men were placed under arrest on trespassing and conspiracy charges.
Base jumping is legal with a specific permit, but it is never allowed in densely populated areas.
The BASE jumping incident brought up the question of hotel and building security.
How did they manage to get inside the hotel and out onto the roof without being stopped or questioned by security?
"It doesn't appear they were guests of hotel, so we don't know how they got in," said Talkoff.
