Pepper Spray Causes Hazmat Situation At San Jose Hotel
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Firefighters responded to a hotel in San Jose Monday morning where a hazardous material was detected, fire officials said.
According to a San Jose fire dispatcher, pepper spray was released in the front lobby of the Extended Stay America hotel at 6199 San Ignacio Ave. around 4:45 a.m.
One person was treated at the scene for exposure to the spray while 29 people were evacuated from their homes and another 22 were ordered to shelter-in-place.
Firefighters said the situation was considered under control by 6:19 a.m. and guests have been allowed back into their rooms.
However, the lobby will remain closed until it can be professionally cleaned.
The incident remained under investigation.
