There are 20+ million children in this country who are at risk of hunger.
In San Francisco, more than 150,000 people live with food insecurity. The SF Food Bank estimates that 1 in 5 adults in San Francisco struggle each day to feed themselves and their family. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement.
Blessings in a Backpack works to ensure these elementary school children are fed on the weekends throughout the school year. Backpack food includes easy-to-prepare, ready-to-eat meals, like granola bars, juice boxes, mac and cheese, and oatmeal.
Beginning in 2013, CBS San Francisco is forming a 3-year alliance with Blessings in a Backpack to help feed in-need school children throughout the Bay Area. Funding is spread across a 3-year time period to ensure the maximum impact for the students.
