OAKLAND (KCBS) – The Oakland Raiders are hoping wide receiver and kick return specialist Josh Cribbs is as effective as he was before he had knee surgery after last season. The Raiders signed the former Cleveland Browns player to a one year contract.

“If he’s healthy and can return kicks the way he did a few years ago, that’s going to be a big, big help for the Raiders,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. “Those guys that are good kick returners, you can put them in the game and just get the ball in their hands.”

Cribbs has an NFL-high eight kickoff return touchdowns in his eight seasons in Cleveland, but the Browns released him after he injured his knee. The Raiders signed Cribbs on Thursday.

“The trainers have gotten so much better, the rehab has gotten so much better,” Madden said. “There was a time when you’d get one of those knees, your career was done. And then there was a time when it would take a couple years and maybe you could still play but you wouldn’t be the same guy. Then along comes (Vikings running back) Adrian Peterson and he shows not only can you do it in a year, and not only can you be the same guy, you can be better than the guy.” (8:20)

He’s one of those guys who does not get a tattoo for the sake of it. Some deep meaning and thought go into his body art.

OAKLAND (CBS Sports) – It sounds like punter Chris Kluwe — cut earlier this month by the Minnesota Vikings — will continue to be outspoken about the issues in which he believes. Now, he’ll have to take his megaphone to the West Coast.

That’s because he has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders for the league minimum. A resident of Southern California’s Huntington Beach, Kluwe replaces punter extraordinaire Shane Lechler, who signed an off-season free-agent deal with the Texans.

“I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe told Fox Sports on Wednesday. “Now, my family can actually come to games.”

Kluwe gained national attention when he penned a strongly-worded letter to a Maryland lawmaker who had tried to discourage members of the Baltimore Ravens from speaking out in favor of a same-sex marriage initiative. He is now considered one of the most outspoken advocates for gay rights among American professional athletes.

Kluwe now gets the chance to start over after spending his entire eight-year career in Minnesota, where he averaged 44.4 yards per punt, a team record and grew in popularity because he showcased his love for fantasy games on Twitter and spoke loudly in favor of punter Ray Guy’s Hall of Fame candidacy.

OAKLAND (Bleacher Report) — This past weekend, the Oakland Raiders’ newest draft selections and un-drafted free agents got their first dose of the NFL in the team’s rookie mini-camp.

While too much is often made of rookie camp impressions, this is the first on-field activity fans have to go on in quite some time. Nonetheless, there are undoubtedly key takeaways.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s practice was the only one open to the media, but the Raiders’ local beat writers made plenty of valuable observations.

ALAMEDA (CBS/AP) — Longtime Oakland Raiders chief executive office Amy Trask resigned her position on Saturday, ending the tenure of one of the highest-ranking women in American professional sports.

Trask spent 25 seasons with the Raiders starting during their time in Los Angeles and continuing after the move to Oakland in 1995. She became CEO in 1997 and was one of late owner Al Davis’ most trusted advisers before his death in October 2011.

“Earlier today, I informed Mark Davis of my decision to leave the Raiders,” she said in an email statement. “Having honored a commitment that I made to effectuate a smooth transition and transfer of control, I no longer wish to remain with the organization. For over a quarter of a century, it was my honor and my privilege to work for the Raiders. I will forever appreciate the opportunity afforded me by Al Davis.”

Mark Davis took over the Raiders following his father’s death. He hired general Reggie McKenzie to run the football operations in January 2012 and has been looking for a potential team president this offseason.

The Raiders released a statement late Saturday thanking Trask for her time with the team.

“Mark Davis, Carol Davis and the rest of the Raiders family would like to thank Amy Trask for her valued contributions to the Raiders for the past 25 years. The Raiders wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”

The organization has been almost completely overhauled since Al Davis’ death with most of the coaches, scouts and many front office executives no longer part of the Raiders.

Trask’s main focus of late was on improving Oakland’s stadium situation. The Raiders are in the final year of their lease at the outdated Coliseum in Oakland and would like to reach a deal with the city to build a new stadium near the current site.

OAKLAND (CBS Sports) – Vince Young’s comeback attempt seemed to be gaining momentum this spring following a pair of strong workouts with the Oakland Raiders and at University of Texas’ Pro Day.

It has hit a snag though, at least temporarily, as the Raiders apparently have lost interest in signing the former Longhorns’ All-American. The decision was reportedly made after Oakland selected former Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson with a fourth-round pick in last week’s NFL Draft, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Young, who turns 30 in mid-May, has spent this semester in Austin and is on track to graduate from Texas later this month. During Young’s time in Austin, he has impressed Texas co-offensive coordinator Major Applewhite with his improved body control and timing. The two-time Rose Bowl MVP is looking to hone his mechanics in hopes of earning a shot with another team in training camp.

Young, the No. 3 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, did not play in 2012 after his release from the Buffalo Bills last August.

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — The Oakland Raiders have re-signed kicker Eddy Carmona in a move that provides relief for mainstay Sebastian Janikowski during off-season workouts and training camp, as well as insurance in case Janikowski gets injured between now and the regular-season opener.

Carmona, a left-footed kicker out of Harding University in Arkansas, spent training camp and preseason with the Raiders in 2012 after originally signing as a non-drafted rookie free agent. He was out of football last year after being waived by the Raiders on Aug. 31.

A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Carmona made three of four field goal attempts in four preseason games last year, including 53- and 56-yard efforts. His 56-yard field goal came off the infield dirt at O.co Coliseum against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 25. He was also four-for-five on extra-point attempts.

Carmona played one season at Harding after transferring from Central Arkansas.

OAKLAND (CBS Sports) — Tyler Wilson answered the biggest call of his life while posing for a picture with a fellow Walmart shopper in Greenwood, Arkansas.

The former Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback had grown restless waiting to hear his name called in last weekend’s NFL Draft, so Wilson did what any Arkansan worth his salt would do: He headed to Walmart.

While there, a fan asked for a picture with Wilson, who got the call about being drafted in the fourth round by the Oakland Raiders as the two posed.

“I was fed up with watching so we just got out and then get the phone call there in Walmart, of all places, but that’s good being from Arkansas,” Wilson said.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—Last year it was all about the quest for quarterbacks, but teams this year opted for large linemen during this first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The first seven picks were all offensive or defensive linemen—Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fischer went first to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Unsurprisingly, Madden watched the draft on Thursday in its entirety, but he told KCBS that he was intrigued by the choices that were made.

“I didn’t know if we would ever get to this day where the three out the first four picks would be offensive linemen. It just shows where the game is and how you have to be a little lucky,” he said.

“The game is still about quarterbacks and if you have the top pick in the draft, you would like to have, like a year ago, an Andrew Luck or an RG3 sitting there. Now here’s Kansas City and Jacksonville and they have one and two (picks) and now guys named Fischer and Joeckel are sitting there.”

Tackle is an important position, he said. If team is lucky to already have a good quarterback, the next important position—the way the game is played today—might be left tackle, Madden conceded.

But Madden also said that it might be less to do with a new trend and more to do with the quality of quarterbacks available.

“You could rate the top-five quarterbacks are coming out of college that are draft eligible but doesn’t mean their first-round picks. Maybe there are years when the top-rated quarterback goes in the second round and that was very close to happening this year,” he said. “A year ago, there were great quarterbacks here. This year, not so much.”

Quarterback EJ Manuel of Florida State was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the16th pick. Madden said he was surprised by that choice and doesn’t remember seeing Manuel play.

Madden also talked about Eric Reid, who chose to play at LSU instead of Stanford, where Coach Jim Harbaugh had tried to recruit him. Now Reid is headed to play for the 49ers.

“I had a few those too, where you remember a kid from your college days when you were recruiting and you didn’t get him. You know wanted him then so get another shot at him and I think that’s what Jim Harbaugh did,” he said. “It’s tough. The kid went to LSU and he was real good player but his dad went to LSU and was in the Hall Of Fame there. That’s a hard one to crack.”

Madden pointed out that college coaches have an advantage when they make the move to the NFL because they have a wide knowledge about the players they recruited and played against.

Madden also commented on the Raider’s decision to pick cornerback D.J. Hayden—considered by some to be a medical risk because of a near-death injury that he suffered during practice in November while at the University of Houston.

Hayden has been cleared by NFL doctors.

“I think the Raiders made a good move in that they were able to probably get the guy they wanted anyway and get an extra third by moving. So they were able to fill a gap in the draft and get the guy they wanted anyway.”

Madden said Eric Fischer is great pick for Kansas since they now have quarterback Alex Smith. Coach Andy Reid, he said, already knows he has quarterback and now need someone that can protect him.

“Alex Smith will be happy, Andy Reid will be happy and the entire Fischer family will probably be happy for a long time,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— “I’m looking forward to the NFL Draft, but I look forward to it every year. I always have. It’s just gotten to be so big now,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. “There’s a lot of build up and you kind of get more excited about it than the reality of it. When the reality hits you think, ‘this is kind of boring.”"

Of the record 73 underclassmen in this year’s NFL draft, nearly two dozen have been projected by at least one analyst as having a chance to go in the first round.

“You don’t really know any of the players until your team picks a guy,” he continued. “Many are saying Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel will be the first to be picked. This year I anticipate a lot of lineman as the top picks.”

There’s no high-profile quarterback destined to go No. 1 and instantly become the face of a downtrodden franchise. There’s not even a running back or wide receiver worthy of the top overall pick, someone with the kind of swagger that wins over fans weary of losing.

Even without the obvious stars, Madden said the event has become a lot more glamorous since his days coaching the Raiders.

“It was before cell phones and the internet and the draft was held on a weekday starting at 9 o’clock in the morning in New York. They’d have it in a conference room with a telephone on speaker phone. We’d actually be one of the few teams that would leave it on speaker phone the whole day. Other teams would just call in when it was their turn and hang up. We would actually listen in as other teams would take players off the board,” he recalled.

“It is a lot like Christmas as a kid and you get the players as a gift. I remember my first year I thought we were going to get every one of them. I think we ended up drawing 26th pick and the top guy would already be gone. I would get upset over every player that would get drafted,” Madden remembered.

“There wasn’t much competition in drafting players from the smaller schools. We mostly talked to the coaches and kept notes on who they said were their best players and the best players they played against. It was like keeping a scout’s diary. Sometimes it would take a few years for those notes to come into play.”

This year’s draft begins at 5 p.m. Pacific Time Thursday.

(CBS Sports) – Multiple reports link the Oakland Raiders and GM Reggie McKenzie to trade-down possibilities. It’s no surprise they’re speeding down that avenue. McKenzie’s rebuilding effort will occur on a steep incline with no second-round pick as payment for now-former QB Carson Palmer. The Raiders entered Thursday with three picks in the top 100, and three in the bottom 50: 3, 66, 100, 172, 205, 209, 219.

Here are the prime suspects who might covet the No. 3 pick:

Philadelphia (fourth overall): The Eagles go up one spot, get OT Lane Johnson, and offer the Raiders the certainty of knowing DT Sharrif Floyd or CB Dee Milliner will be available.

Arizona (seventh overall): Levi Brown isn’t a left tackle and Palmer doesn’t want to be the crashtest case behind 2012 fourth-round pick Bobby Massie. If the Cardinals stay at No. 7, they can still find impact blockers — OGs Jonathan Cooper and Chance Warmack and right tackle D.J. Fluker are top-12 players on NFLDraftScout.com’s board — but a premium left tackle would be worth rolling the dice for first-year GM Steve Kiem and coach Bruce Arians.

San Diego (11th overall): Stunningly the Chargers lost Jared Gaither and did nothing to improve an offensive line that had more leaks than Grandpa (sorry, 95 has its drawbacks). Mike McCoy might be the mind to resurrect Philip Rivers — but not without better pass protection.

The players served ice cream and chatted with some of their smallest fans in their latest community outreach event.

“We’ve got chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and cookies and cream,” said Defensive Lineman Jared Veldheer, who served dozens of children at the hospital’s sports medicine center for young athletes.

“It’s great, you know. Being able to interact with the community and you know, these kids,” he added.

10-year-old Jordan Darden stood in line holding one of his shoes to have it signed. He said he was looking forward most to getting quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s autograph.

Pryor said he gets just as much or maybe more from meeting the children as they do from meeting him.

“Especially in Oakland you know, this is the city that we represent and people have our backs. This is the best place to give back,” said Pryor.

Navi Saray said the event was a great help for her eight-year-old son and four-year-old daughter who are both regularly treated for chronic asthma.

“They don’t think about their asthma or how they’re ill. They think they’re just normal kids,” she said.

The players visit the hospital at least once a year.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) – What would the NFL Draft be without Mel Kiper’s hair and 45,000 mock drafts? Probably a lot less fun. We’d all get a lot more done over the last two weeks, but it would assuredly be less fun.

Part of the mock draft process is the subjective process in which the mock drafter tries to weigh who he thinks the drafting team should take, who the drafting team thinks they should take, and everything that happens before that pick.

Prediction Machine tried to take all of that stuff out of the process (except maybe Kiper’s hair), and produce an objective look at who every NFL team ‘should’ take in Thursday’s upcoming draft.

So, how exactly did they do this?

To come up with statistical inputs for rookies, we run a very complex set of algorithms that factor college stats, previous utilization and strength of competition, combine measurables, role and expected utilization of the player’s NFL team (in this case an average NFL team) and previous performance of similar rookies at that position in general. This allows us to predict both the player’s projected ratio stats such as yards-per-carry, percentage of tackles made while on the field and passing completion percentage, as well as his forecasted usage for the upcoming NFL season. Then we can compare all rookies based on who we think will make the biggest positive impact in his first year. It’s a system that we have applied to the previous three drafts and with great success. These projections have highlighted the likely success of Andy Dalton (#1 overall last year), A.J. Green, Von Miller, Aldon Smith, J.J. Watt, DeMarco Murray, Percy Harvin, Jerod Mayo, Louis Delmas, Sean Smith, Ryan Clady, Eric Berry, Sean Weatherspoon and even Super Bowl hero Tracy Porter, while suggesting that Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Delone Carter, Jonathan Baldwin, Glenn Dorsey, Vernon Gholston, Everette Brown and even Matt Ryan were/are overrated.

So after plugging everything into their computers, Prediction Machine’s NFL Draft expert Matt Richner and general manager Paul Bessire released all seven rounds of their “objective” mock draft.

The Raiders select DT Sharrif Floyd out of Florida with the third overall selection, while the 49ers take cornerback DJ Hayden from Houston with the 31st overall pick. OT Luke Joeckel goes first in the Prediction Machine draft, much as he’s expected to go in the actual one.

The entire first round of Prediction Machine’s Draft is below. For the entire draft visit Prediction Machine.

SAN LUIS OBISPO (CBS/AP) — A former Oakland Raiders assistant coach best known for alleging the team’s head coach broke his jaw said at his own assault trial that he acted in self-defense when he hit a man with a beer bottle outside a bar.

In 2009, Randy Hanson alleged that then-coach Tom Cable broke his jaw and teeth during a fight at a hotel.

Hanson told jurors 51-year-old James Kelsey approached him at a Pismo Beach bar in August and taunted him relentlessly about Cable.

Hanson conceded he remembered little about the night because he’d had 10 glasses of wine, but said Kelsey threatened him and he felt afraid.

Kelsey testified that Hanson gave him a broken nose and concussion with a beer bottle.

OAKLAND (KCBS) – Like all NFL teams, the Raiders are getting ready for this week’s draft. John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew the Silver and Black are better prepared than in the past.

“That’s the strength of (general manager) Reggie McKenzie,” Madden said, “setting up the draft and the draft room and the whole organization of the draft. And he’s had time to do it and get some of his people in there and change that draft culture. So they’re ready for it, but do they have enough picks?”

The Raiders have the third choice overall and the fourth pick in the third round.

“Just because you have it organized well, does that mean it’s going to be good?… It’s not what the dressing looks like on the outside, it’s how you pick and who you pick. And then whoever you pick, how they do. And in some cases, you really can’t judge that for three or four years… I used to joke a guy gets married, and you say how do you like your wife? ‘Heck, I like her or I wouldn’t have married her, come back and see me in five years.’ It’s the same thing here.”

Madden doesn’t see much draft day dealing by the Raiders.

“What you have to do is you have to get ready for anything. Those trade up-trade downs really don’t happen before the draft, they happen during the draft, and they happen when your choice comes up… There are some teams that are locked into their spot in the draft, and I think the Raiders would be that way.” (8:35)

With countless holes on the roster, both in starting positions and further down the depth chart, the Raiders have plenty of areas that they need to address with very few picks to do so.

In this draft, we will start to get a sense of how GM Reggie McKenzie is looking to build this team moving forward and if he can bring with him the draft success that he was a part of during his time in Green Bay.

Either way, it is this upcoming draft class that will go a long way to defining the future success of this Raiders front office regime.

MISSOULA, Montana (CBS/AP) — Errol Mann, the kicker for the Oakland Raiders team that won the 1977 Super Bowl, has died. He was 71.

Mann died on April 11 at his home in Missoula, said Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Memorial services were being held Friday afternoon.

Mann was remembered by family and friends as a straight-forward, fun-loving, competitive man.

“My mother was widowed and handicapped and raised us three,” said Mann’s sister, Bonnie Gran of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. “She always said, `No quitters in this house.’ I thought Errol really followed that through with his NFL career — overcoming injuries and the like.

“Everything Errol did, he did with determination,” Gran said.

Mann was born in Breckenridge, Minn., graduated from high school in Campbell, Minn., and played college football at the University of North Dakota. He spent a dozen years in the NFL and ended his time with the Detroit Lions as the team’s all-time scoring leader. He is still fourth with 636 points during his eight years there.

Mann then played for the Oakland Raiders, joining the 1976 team coached by John Madden that beat Minnesota 32-14 in the Super Bowl. He hit two field goals in the title game. The next year, he led the NFL in scoring with 99 points.

Mann lived in Missoula for the past 25 years and had worked as a financial broker.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, who he met in 1983 while he was helping a friend build an airplane. She was a skydiver and had arrived to borrow some gear from the same friend.

“She is a gift I cherish without equal,” Mann wrote in a letter to his high school classmates marking their 50-year reunion.

Mann was an accomplished athlete, sportsman, pilot, builder and chef.

“He was so unique in that he knew something about everything, because he had such an inquisitive mind,” Lois Mann said. “He was never embarrassed to ask someone how something worked.

“I’d never known anyone like him,” she said. “He demanded you be accountable, honorable and it was frustrating for a lot of people. He demanded 110 percent of everything.”

Hall of Fame linebacker Ted Hendricks, who also played on the Raiders championship team, told the Missoulian that Madden sought his advice about bringing Mann to the Raiders from the Lions in 1976.

“I blocked one of his kicks, when I was with the Packers,” Hendricks said. “And then he got the winning field goal, he was so mad at me for blocking that first one.”

The men became friends.

The day Mann was cut by the Raiders during the 1979 training camp, Hendricks said he skipped curfew.

“And Madden said that was allowed, because I was out with Errol.”

OAKLAND (Bleacher Report) – The Oakland Raiders need help at a lot of positions on the roster, but there are plenty of prospects to be had in the 2013 NFL Draft to address many of those needs.

At this point, especially after having added QB Matt Flynn via trade, it would make the most sense for the Raiders to address the defensive side of the ball in the first round.

Of course, any first-round trade down would be much welcomed and would allow for the possibility of adding that many more of these players.

OAKLAND (CBS Sports) — Prosecutors will not file DUI charges against Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jacoby Ford stemming from a traffic stop last month.

Ford was pulled over March 14 because his windows were tinted so much that officers couldn’t see in. After approaching the car and speaking with Ford, however, officers allegedly smelled alcohol on his breath.

The 25-year-old receiver subsequently failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest.

The case was turned over to the Alamada County District Attorney’s Office, which decided this past week not to pursue charges in the case.

“The District Attorney’s Office has declined to file charges against Jacoby Ford,” a DA spokeswoman said.

Ford had a decent rookie season in 2010 — 25 catches, 470 yards, two scores — but has been scarcely effective since. He missed all of 2012 with a left foot injury.
