The male pedestrian was struck shortly before 1:55 a.m. on northbound Highway 101 just south of Masten Avenue, a CHP dispatcher said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The big-rig driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with
authorities.

The crash prompted the closure of northbound traffic on the highway until about 4:20 a.m. when the roadway was reopened.

• Owl service: Extra service on Muni Owl Lines (1 to 5 a.m service): 5 Fulton, 14 Mission, 22 Fillmore, 24 Divisadero, 38 Geary, 90 Owl, 91 Owl, and L and N Owl motor coach service. Frequency will be shortened from 30 to 15 minutes.
• Extra Owl service is subject to change, based on operating conditions.
• The F Market and Wharves service will be provided by motor coaches after approximately 4 p.m. There will be reroutes only if necessary.

BART

• Customers are encouraged to buy two-way tickets at the start of the evening to avoid long lines for return tickets at the end of the evening.
• BART trains will continue to run until around 3 am Sunday, January 1, 2012. Trains will run at their normal intervals during the extended hours. For example, if your train arrives at your favorite station at 11 pm, it will also arrive 12 am, 1 am, 2 am and 3 am.
• BART will have extended service that evening. To help ease the crowding at the Embarcadero and Montgomery Stations, the following will be in effect after 8 p.m.:
  • Trains coming from the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will at Montgomery Station, but not at Embarcadero Station. After the fireworks, customers returning on the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will pick up the trains back at Montgomery as well.
  • Trains coming from the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont lines will stop at Embarcadero Station, but not at Montgomery Street. After the fireworks, customers going to Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont will also catch the trains at Embarcadero for their return trip.
  • If you are going to the Peninsula, you are encouraged to use Montgomery Station rather than Embarcadero station. If you do board at Embarcadero, take any train, but you may need to transfer at

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is again running their holiday Free Tipsy Tow Home service for anyone in Northern California. If you’re drinking and don’t think you should drive, give them a call. You don’t have to be a AAA member to call (and neither does your tipsy friend), because the Tipsy Tow program is open to everyone. They offer a free five-mile tow home for drinking drivers and their vehicles, including potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders, and restaurant managers. Give them a call!

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/FUNCHEAPSF) – Thankfully on Christmas day the city of San Francisco is going to reward you with a ticket-free day of parking…mostly…If you’ve got better things to do than be with your family on Christmas and need a car to run those errands you’ll pretty much have free reign while parking anywhere in the city.

Although parking hazardously is always ticketable and towable – as is parking in a red or blue zone – almost everything else is yours for the parking. And watch out – Christmas Eve is a normal day and you’ll get ticketed just like every other day.

• On Christmas Day parking meters and 7-day street sweeping will not be enforced citywide.
• Commuter tow away and residential parking permits will not be enforced.
• Hazards are always subject to citation and towing.
• Christmas Eve (Saturday, December 24, 2011) is a normal day and subject to all normal parking regulations

The crash happened about 12:45 p.m. along northbound 880 near 23^rd Avenue, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.

While the truck was righted and removed from the crash scene by mid-afternoon. Crews were able to fully reopen the freeway around 5 p.m.

Bartlett said the extent of the truck driver’s injuries were not immediately known, but he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

Each of the three games begins at 7:15 p.m., and beginning in the top of the seventh inning, traffic on several streets near Third and King streets will be affected, police said.

King Street will be shut down to traffic in both directions between Fourth Street and the intersection of King and Townsend streets near The Embarcadero.

Taxis will still be able to pick up fares on Third Street between King and Townsend streets.

Drivers traveling north on Third Street from south of the Third Street Bridge will not be able to continue north, police said. All traffic from the parking lots south of that bridge will be diverted south on Third Street toward 16th Street for freeway access.

Second Street will be closed in both directions for the block between Townsend and King streets, except for Major League Baseball shuttles and South Beach Harbor parking lot traffic, police said.

Berry Street will be closed to all traffic eastbound from Fourth Street except for authorized MLB shuttles and residential traffic.

Traffic leaving the ballpark driveway at Second and King streets will be directed east on The Embarcadero, police said.

After the game, taxi traffic will also be restricted to taxi stands on the west side of Second Street and on Third Street, both between King and Townsend streets.

The car crashed into the pole near Clement Street at 4:35 a.m., fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

She said the driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening but couldn’t say if anyone else had been in the car.

The accident left the pole leaning precariously over Park Presidio, and police shut down the thoroughfare in both directions.

A Pacific Gas & Electric crew responded and removed the damaged pole, and the roadway reopened late Thursday morning, PG&E spokeswoman Fiona Chan said.  No power outages were reported.

North and southbound traffic was blocked by several tons of mud and rock at Limekiln Creek, about 25 miles south of the town of Big Sur, according to Caltrans.

Crews on Saturday removed some of the debris, and Caltrans planned to open Highway 1 to escorted traffic for an hour at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and then continuously overnight beginning at 6 p.m.

A 2-mile section of Highway 1 continues to be closed to traffic in both directions at Rocky Creek, where portion of the roadway collapsed in winter storms March 16, about 15 miles north of Big Sur.

A $2.5 million roadway restoration project is under way to stabilize and repair the roadway.

The California Highway Patrol is patrolling the area at both slides to ensure public safety.

So when you see the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium near City Hall, transformed into mayhem, with littler, emergency vehicles, burned vehicles and people lined up to get vaccines, don’t worry, it’s not real.

“The scenes that they’re shooting look very complicated and I think it will highlight San Francisco as a city that can pull off scenes like this,” said Susannah Greason Robbins, executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission.

But groupies don’t get too excited– plenty of police officers will be there to direct traffic and gawkers away from the scene. Here’s a list of street closures through Sunday:

Friday

-Grove Street from Larkin to Polk streets, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
-Laguna Street from Hayes to Fell streets and Linden Street from Octavia to Buchanan streets, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday

-Sansome Street from California to Pine streets, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
-Minna Street from Fifth to Mary streets, 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Sunday

-Taylor Street from Filbert to Union streets and Aladdin Terrace from Taylor street to the Easterly Terminus intersection, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Crews will also be filming scenes at Candlestick Park and the Mission Bay neighborhood that will not involve street closures.

Since arriving in early January and through the end of this month, “Contagion” is expected to pump an estimated $5 million into the local economy with location fees, rentals, hotels, dining and local hires.

Although the film didn’t qualify for a tax and city fees rebate program because of its short stay, 100 crew members did take advantage of the commission’s new vendor discount program.

The feature film, directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh, isn’t the only major production bringing in big bucks to the city this month.

A new TV series “Alcatraz” filmed a couple of days earlier this week. The Style Network show “Clean House” is shooting for a week starting Tuesday. And HBO’s production “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen, is being filmed in its entirety here from Feb. 28 through May.

Filming for feature, commercial and still shoots was up 54 percent this January compared with the same time last year, Robbins said. Feature films alone are bringing in an estimated $2 million more this month.

“It’s a great way to start out this new year,” Robbins said. “But I think it’s only a small part of what we can expect to see for the rest of 2011.”

Surely, drivers can understand.

The crash was reported at 2:03 a.m. on Highway 237 just east of Lawrence Expressway, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

Initial reports indicated the crash involved two vehicles, but once officers responded to the scene they found four vehicles were involved, Caggiano said.

The person who was killed ended up on the westbound side of Highway 237, he said, although it was unclear if that person was ejected from a vehicle or had been standing on the roadway and was struck by traffic.

The fatal collision resulted in a partial closure of both directions of Highway 237, and a Sig-alert was issued at 2:22 a.m.

That alert was cancelled at 5:37 a.m. when the roadway re-opened.

Two other people were injured in the crash and transported to nearby hospitals, and all four vehicles involved were impounded, according to the CHP.

Officers responded to reports of a white vehicle and possibly its driver on fire just west of the bridge toll plaza in at 12:55 p.m., CHP Officer Eric Anderson said.

The CHP held westbound traffic at the toll plaza while a medical helicopter responded.

A Sig-alert was issued at 1:05 p.m. and cancelled at 1:55 p.m.

But since Volkwagen-size boulders buried the only all-weather highway into the park nearly five years ago, residents, tourism officials and transportation engineers have faced a serious conundrum about how to fix the road.

About 800 million tons of falling rocks and debris created a blockade so huge some tourists had to take hours-long detours to reach the valley.

Crews have since slapped up temporary bridges across the Merced River.

Now, the latest plans for a permanent passage run as high as $180 million. Options include tunneling through the rubble and building a long concrete bridge even planners say looks more suited to Los Angeles.

The stretch of coastal roadway south of Sloat Boulevard that was shut down when nearby cliffs washed away in December 2009 has been reopened to southbound traffic, according to the Department of Public Works.

Crews worked to restabilize the roadway and reduce the two-lane road to one.

Two public parking lots at Sloat Boulevard also reopened after undergoing repairs, according to the DPW.

During work on the Great Highway Stabilization Project, crews removed an estimated 1,000 tons of beach debris and constructed a 425-foot rock revetment on the beach to help prevent future erosion.

Further emergency work that will address threatened public infrastructure along a 3,500-foot stretch of coast north of Fort Funston is under review by the National Parks Service and the California Costal Commission.

A multi-agency effort to transform the public landscape at Ocean Beach, called the Ocean Beach Master Plan, is currently being developed by state, federal and local agencies.
