Don Knapp is a general assigment reporter at KPIX 5 News. He is the first San Francisco Bay Area television reporter to shoot, write and edit a “VJ” internet video story for New York Times website, along with print article for the New York Times.

Prior to KPIX 5 he was at KRON as a general assignment reporter for daily news, major stories and special projects including primary coverage of the murder trials of Scott Peterson, Susan Polk and Scott Dyleski.

He was one of the first KRON VJs (trained by Michael Rosenblum) to be reviewed and approved by KRON management for daily turns (shoot, write, narrate, edit video and transmit completed video over internet). He produced and aired more than 120 VJ stories.

He also was a CNN Network Correspondent in the San Francisco CNN Bureau network correspondent for 12 years. Knapp was assigned to many of the network’s major stories in the Bay Area, Pacific Northwest and across the United States, (including Hawaii and Alaska) and overseas. His top assignments included: Kuwait oil field fires, Persian Gulf mine sweeping and Iraqi refugee crisis following “Desert Storm” – the Gulf War. Yellowstone forest fires, San Francisco earthquake, Mississippi and Missouri River floods, Rodney King riots, Hurricane Iniki on Kauai, Oklahoma City bombing, Los Angeles Northridge earthquake, O. J. Simpson trial, Northern California floods, Unabomber trial, Montana Freeman standoff, Oklahoma Monster Tornado, Columbine school shootings, Montana Bitterroot Valley Wildfires, Seattle World Trade Organization protests.

Prior to CNN, two decades reporting for major San Francisco Bay Area broadcast news operations including KGO Television News, KGO Radio News, KRON Television News, KPIX Television News and Public Affairs, and KTVU Television News.

Knapp received his Master of Arts in Journalism from Ohio State University and his Bacherlor of Fine Arts in Broadcasting from Ohio University.

Knapp is a recipient of NATAS Silver Circle Award and numerous other awards including: the Society of Professional Journalists – Career Achievement Award; a National Emmy, CNN Team Coverage, Oklahoma City Bombing; Cable Ace Award, CNN for the Los Angeles Earthquake; Peninsula Press Club Awards; New York Times Print and New Media ; RTNDA Award, KRON, Mexico City Earthquake Live Shots; San Francisco Press Club Award; and KTVU Special Report and Emmy, KTVU News Feature Report.
