Julie Watts

Julie’s work has prompted FDA recalls, federal investigations and legislation to protect consumers.

On the ConsumerWatch, Julie and her team help resolve viewer problems and examine consumer/business trends. Her investigations also expose scams, unscrupulous business practices and loopholes in consumer legislation.

Julie’s consumer reports air weeknights on KPIX and weekly on KCBS/KCAL in Los Angeles. Her stories also air nationally on CBS stations across the country.

In addition to her role as the station’s consumer-investigative reporter, Julie is the weekend morning news anchor and meteorologist (AMS) at KPIX.

Julie’s work was recently honored with three prestigious national awards. Her year-long “Toxic Safety” investigation into car seat flame retardants won the Gracie Award for best Investigative Feature and the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service. Her child ID theft investigation, “Toddler Has a Credit Card”, also won The National Headliner Award for Business and Consumer Reporting. Together, the investigations prompted two new pieces of legislation and a new law in 2016.

Julie’s 2014 series “UN-Covered California” also won the National Press Club’s award for Consumer Journalism. The reports exposed numerous flaws with California’s health insurance exchange, prompted changes by insurers and forced action by state regulators.

The 7-time Emmy® Award Winner has also been honored with more than a dozen regional awards including Associated Press and Edward R. Murrow Awards.

Off air, Julie is the Mom of a precocious toddler, a brand new baby and she is the founder of NewsMom.com. The website features “real news” and research that is relevant to parents – as opposed to the sponsored blogs written by “influencers” and “brand ambassadors” that have saturated the online parenting world.

NewsMom.com provides a platform for professional journalists to share their relevant news stories with an audience of parents that they wouldn’t otherwise reach. But more importantly, it’s a transparent and unbiased resource for parents to access “real news” and research they can trust.

You can follow NewsMom on Facebook and Twitter.

Julie began working at KPIX in 2009 as a Meteorologist and Reporter. In 2010, she won the American Meteorological Society’s prestigious award for “Excellence in Science Reporting by a Broadcast Meteorologist.”

Prior to that, Julie earned her meteorology credentials (AMS Seal) from the American Meteorological Society while working at KCRA 3 in Sacramento. In addition to weekend weather, she covered everything from cooking segments to creepy critters while hosting the “KCRA Noon Show Live from the Arden Fair Mall.”

Nationally, Julie appeared as a host on TLC’s “Designing Spaces” and was an entertainment reporter/producer for BBC & Reuters-TV in Los Angeles.

Julie began her news career as a Traffic Anchor, Weather Anchor and Reporter for CBS-47 in Fresno. Julie was also the voice of news and traffic each morning on the Central Valley’s Clear Channel radio stations.

Julie earned a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and a M.A. in Online Journalism from the University of Southern California. At her USC commencement ceremony, she was named Graduate Student of the Year.

Off Air

Outside of work, Julie sits on the Board of Governors for the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and was the Awards Chair for many years, overseeing the regional Emmy® Award competition & ceremony.

In an effort to tell stories that might not otherwise be told, Julie often finds herself behind the camera. She shoots, edits and produces special projects while traveling overseas. Her work as a Multi-Media/Video Journalist (MMJ/VJ) has taken her from Sierra Leone to India and won several awards.

Julie is active in several local non-profits and volunteers at her Alma Mater, Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, where she taught a broadcasting course for aspiring journalists and hosts a series of career symposiums each year.

Julie was born and raised in San Jose and now lives in the Bay Area with her husband, their daughter, new baby boy and ”dog-ter”.
