Sherry Hu

Sherry HuSherry Hu returns to KPIX 5 and profiles low-income, at-risk Bay Area teenagers, taking over for the series started by Wendy Tokuda, “Students Rising Above.”

The Emmy-award winning reporter also showcases Oakland Unified School District student voices. A proud product of Oakland’s public schools, Sherry supervises and produces stories for ONews-The Voice of Oakland Students, a student-built website for, by and about students.  She’s also a member of the Media Enterprise Alliance (MEA) team at the school district television station, KDOL.  There, students learn video production, create their own newscast, work on paid projects and also get a big dose of life skills to prepare them for college and career.

Sherry has more than three decades of media experience and life knowledge to inspire young people.  Her journey in broadcasting began at the UC Berkeley radio station.  It was her burning desire to air real stories about the Asian American community and shatter stereotypes.

After several years in radio, Sherry made the move to television news in 1978, when she landed a job as the News Director’s secretary at KPIX 5.  It wasn’t all that long before she moved from behind the camera to on-camera as a reporter, then later anchor and multi-media journalist.  She retired after 32 years working with the best in the business.

Throughout her career, Sherry has thrived on uncovering stories and news of people – here in the Bay Area, especially Oakland, across the country and around the world.

Her work has earned recognition with an Emmy award and several nominations, as well as first-place awards from APTRA, RTNDA, the Peninsula Press Club and the California Bar Association.  The Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute honored her as a distinguished alumnus. Her peers voted her into the San Francisco/Northern California National Academy of Television Arts & Science (NATAS) Silver Circle.  And in 2015, Sherry was inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame.

An Oakland native and a Cal grad, Sherry volunteers as a mentor, tutor – and emcee or moderator for non-profit fundraisers, civic events and political debates.
