PALO ALTO (CBS SF) — A man was arrested on the Fourth of July on suspicion of indecent exposure after a couple witnessed him allegedly masturbating while riding a bicycle near a Palo Alto park, police said Tuesday.

Clark Duncan McElfresh, 51, was arrested about 7:45 p.m. Thursday a few blocks from Seale Park in Palo Alto where the couple had called police minutes earlier to report seeing a man expose himself, police said.

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) – A man who threw a spear at a moving car in Sacramento has been arrested, according to police.

Published reports Wednesday said that the spear was lodged in the car after hitting its front fender.

Police said a witness called Tuesday night to report a man standing in the road throwing a spear at a passing vehicle, and officers arrested 56-year-old Jeffrey Allen Jones on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) – A homeless man has been arrested for threatening to kill Congressman Sam Farr, said the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephen Brown walked into Congressman Farr’s office in Santa Cruz Monday and asked his aid out to lunch, said deputies. When she refused, Brown allegedly walked out of the office saying he was going to wait for Congressman Farr and “blow up the county building,” reports Salinas CBS Affiliate KION.

MERCED (CBS/AP) — A Central Valley high school teacher charged with having a longtime sexual affair with an underage student has been sentenced to five years of probation and five months in jail.

Twenty-eight-year-old Melody Carter-McCabe was sentenced on Monday in Merced County Superior Court after pleading no contest to nine felony counts of unlawful sex with a minor. Carter-McCabe won’t have to register as a sex offender and will be given credit for jail time already served.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Police have identified the woman fatally stabbed Friday afternoon in San Jose as 29-year-old San Jose resident Sandra Cruzes-Gonsalez and are searching for her ex-boyfriend Juan Ramirez in connection with the homicide.

At about 2:37 p.m., officers received a report of a person stabbed in the 900 block of North First Street, just east of the County Government Center at 70 W. Hedding St., police spokesman Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers located the victim lying in the parking lot of her apartment complex suffering from multiple stab wounds, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Two administrators at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco are being called heroes for nabbing a suspected iPad thief on campus.

The private Catholic high school, where every student is issued the tablet computers, has seen a rash of thefts as of late. “You just get tired of it,” said Bill Gotch, the school’s Dean of Students.

Gotch said he was making his rounds on campus Thursday afternoon when he saw a suspicious young man with a backpack on the athletic field.

SAN JOSE (CBS/AP) — Prosecutors have formally charged a former day care worker accused of trying to slip sleeping pills to 10 children under the age of two.

Santa Clara County District Attorney office on Thursday charged 59-year-old Deborah Gratz with five misdemeanor counts of attempted child endangerment and five misdemeanor counts of assault.

Daniel Hill, 36, of Reno, was arrested on suspicion of murder for the death of 53-year-old Michael Ponder, who was found stabbed near Kezar Stadium early on Aug. 28, 2010, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A San Francisco Superior Court judge Thursday declined to reduce bail for a man who allegedly stole a taxi and used it to ram a police car, prompting an officer to shoot more than a dozen rounds at him.

The attorney for Peter Russell, 25, had argued for his $175,000 bail to be reduced or removed so he could go to a rehabilitation facility to be treated for alcoholism after the incident last Friday.

However, Judge Jerome Benson said Thursday that the case was too serious for Russell to be set free on a lower bail, citing the violent attacks on the taxi driver and police.

REDWOOD CITY (CBS/AP) — A judge has assigned two doctors to determine if a Wyoming man charged with stealing a luxury yacht in Sausalito and running it aground in Pacifica is mentally fit for trial.

Sixty-two-year-old Leslie Alan Gardner faces three felonies, including grand theft, for allegedly stealing the 82-foot vessel Darling from a Sausalito harbor. It ran aground in Pacifica with Gardner and two others aboard.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said the doctors will evaluate whether Gardner can aid in his own defense.

PINOLE (CBS SF) — A miscommunication between police investigators and the district attorney’s office led to the release of a man now wanted by the FBI for a brazen Pinole bank robbery where he allegedly held a gun to a teller’s head, authorities said.

Gary Casdell Fite, Jr., 22, is suspected of robbing a Mechanics Bank branch on Pinole Valley Road on March 1, law enforcement officials said.

He allegedly jumped the teller counter, held a handgun to the head of a teller and stole a large amount of cash from the drawer, officials said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A long-running case against a former San Francisco police crime lab technician ended in a misdemeanor plea bargain Friday when she pleaded guilty in federal court to a reduced charge of possessing cocaine in 2009.

Deborah Madden, 63, of San Mateo, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge before U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco and will be sentenced by Illston on July 19.

The plea came after two trials in Illston’s court ended in hung juries in October and January on a more serious federal felony charge of obtaining cocaine by means of fraud, deception or subterfuge.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Two men convicted of a complicated scam involving San Francisco’s One Rincon Hill luxury residential tower were sentenced on Tuesday long terms in state prison.

Jay Shah, 48, was ordered Tuesday morning by San Francisco Superior Court Judge Charlene Kieselbach to serve a 20-year term and pay a fine of $14.1 million — twice the amount taken in the scam.

A co-conspirator, 48-year-old Winston Lum, was also sentenced to more than 13 years in prison and fined $4.4 million.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - San Jose police this week arrested two men on suspicion of shooting and killing a 17-year-old boy in June.

San Jose residents Luis Ramos, 24, and Jose Gutierrez, 19, were both arrested on Monday on in connection with the June 12 killing of Leonel Farias, police said.

Farias, a San Jose resident, was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the 900 block of Owsley Avenue near Rocketship Mosaic Elementary School around 6:20 p.m. on June 12, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Police suspected the shooting to be gang-related.

HERCULES (CBS SF) - Police confirmed Friday a married couple is suspected in the killing last week of a Hercules woman after the pair were arrested in Washington state Wednesday with the woman’s stolen car following an alleged month-long crime spree.

Hercules investigators identified Southern California residents Darnell Washington, 25, and Tania Washington, 25, as suspects in the Oct. 5 killing of 55-year-old Susie Ko after reviewing evidence from Ko’s stolen car and interviewing the pair over the past two days in King County, Wash., Detective Connie Van Putten said.

The couple was being held in King County for alleged assault crimes committed there and in Southern California.

MORGAN HILL (CBS SF) – Santa Clara County sheriff’s investigators are looking for a suspect believed to have shot one man and hit another over the head with a hammer early Thursday morning.

Around 3:05 a.m., deputies responded to 911 calls about a shooting near Peebles Avenue and Calle Moniz in a rural area of unincorporated Morgan Hill.

The caller told 911 dispatchers that a 45-year-old man had been shot in the arm and a 25-year-old man had been hit in the head with a hammer, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police say they have arrested 27-year-old Mateo Gutierrez of San Jose on suspicion fatally stabbing 28-year-old Daniel Marichalar of San Jose early Sunday morning.

On Sunday, officers responded to multiple reports of a fight involving about 30 people near Monterey Highway and Bernal Road at about 1 a.m., according to Officer Albert Morales.

Initial reports were that some of the subjects involved in the fight were armed, and that at least one person might have been shot, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Police arrested a 50-year-old San Francisco resident on Monday on suspicion of drugging a man and his girlfriend before sexually assaulting the 22-year-old female on Sept. 21 in San Francisco’s Sunset District, police said.

San Francisco police took suspect Martin J. Vaneycke into custody Monday, police said.

On Sept. 21, the two victims, a male and female couple, were at a bar in San Francisco’s Sunset District, when they met Vaneycke, police said.

The suspect returned to the victim’s house with them under the false pretense of discussing and listening to music, police said.

SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) - Sunnyvale police have arrested a man suspected of committing two recent bank robberies in Santa Clara County.

Adam Kiedrowski, 28, of Lodi, was taken into custody at a Sunnyvale motel on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Sunnyvale police said they began their investigation after a bank robbery in that city on Sept. 5. On that day, a man armed with a semi-automatic pistol entered a U.S. Bank branch, presented a note demanding money and fled on foot with the stolen cash.

FRESNO (CBS/AP) — A man suspected of abducting his two children in California’s Central Valley Friday – prompting an Amber Alert notice – has been located and arrested.

37-year-old Phillip Tumilty was taken into custody in Atwater and his children were not harmed or injured, said the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Dept.

Deputies responded to a family disturbance Friday morning in the community of Empire and learned that Tumilty was involved in an argument with this ex-wife, according to the sheriff’s department.

After the argument, the department said Tumilty told his ex-wife that he would take the kids – 9-year-old Phillip Tumilty Jr. and 6-year-old Tiffany Tumilty - to school. It was then discovered that the children were not taken to school.

Dereck Ohlsen this week was reported missing by his parents, who last saw him at home on Sept. 4 around 8:30 p.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said.
