News of airstrikes by the U.S. and five Arab countries on Islamic State targets inside Syria also included word of a separate action by the U.S. against a group whose name has not been dominating headlines as has ISIS – the jihadist group known as Khorasan.

U.S., Partner Nations Launch Airstrikes Against ISIS Targets In Syria

The U.S. and five Arab countries launched airstrikes Monday night on Islamic State group targets in Syria, expanding a military campaign into a country whose three-year civil war has given the brutal militant group a safe haven.

U.S. fighters dropped bombs on Islamic militants in Iraq Friday, the Pentagon said, redeeming President Barack Obama’s promise of military force to counter the advancing militants and confront the threat they pose to Iraqi civilians and Americans.

President Obama Authorizes Airstrikes In Northern Iraq To Defend Americans From ISIS Militants

President Barack Obama authorized U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq Thursday night, warning they would be launched if needed to defend Americans from advancing Islamic militants and protect civilians under siege. His announcement threatened a renewal of U.S. military involvement in the country’s long sectarian war.
