Approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco is the community of Half Moon Bay and its beaches. Much of the beach and surrounding area is under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Four miles of sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing, fishing and picnicking. In addition to picnicking, there is also overnight camping facilities with showers and flush toilets. The beach lies a half-mile west of Highway 1 on Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay. There are three parking and beach accesses at beaches like Francis Beach, Venice Beach and Dunes Beach. In addition to the beach, there are trails for hiking, horseback riding and bicycling. Leashed dogs are permitted in campsites and on trails but not on the beaches.

This mile-long shoreline, only a little more than 14 miles south of Half Moon Bay, offers multiple opportunities for adventuring with its tide pools, picnic areas, rocky cliffs and secret sandy coves. It’s excellent for shore fishing and there are numerous tasty little rock crabs. Across Highway I is Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, an excellent place for bird watching. You may also be able to spot raccoons, foxes, skunks, deer, kites and blue heron. An excellent game to play when taking young people on a nature walk: give each one a small tablet and pencil. Make a page for each animal, vegetable and mineral. Then as the kids are walking, they write down what the see in each category. Coyote Lake is one of the most popular fishing lakes in the South Bay, although Anderson Reservoir, Lake Almaden, Lake Cunningham, Lake Vasona and Uvas Reservoir all deserve mention. Coyote Lake is the second largest in the South Bay and its water quality is typically superior to the others. The lake, just east of Gilroy, is currently open to boat or shoreline fishing. It’s in a rather remote area but many local fishermen consider Loch Lomond Reservoir the best for fishing in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There are several sport fishing charters operating at Johnson Pier and salmon season normally runs into September. The Santa Cruz Harbor is just one of many excellent spots in the Monterey Bay area and harbor businesses offer fishing equipment for purchase or rental, and chartered fishing trips. If you must have “southern” BBQ, you should drive south along the coast to San Carlos and check out Mack’s. Just be sure you don’t go on Sunday or Monday, when its doors are closed, although the website says it will accept orders of $250 or more on those days. Mack’s specializes in catering, offering a full range of family meals with menus (of course featuring pulled pork if you wish) designed to serve 15 to 30 people. It also doesn’t skimp in the desert offerings.

This spot serves up a range of classic American foods with all sorts of soups and chilis as well as a good variety of barbecue. If pork is on the mind, go for the signature Hogs Breath. This pulled pork shoulder comes seasoned with southern spices after being slow-coked over hardwood coals to finish with a sweet and spicy impression. Every sauce is made fresh daily on the premises. From the Muir Beach parking lot, head across the walking bridge, and up the Fire Road, where you’ll find the main trail. From our experience, it’s best to hit the beach on a low tide, as it’s super small, but very stunning if you time it right! Pirate’s Cove io amed from the bootleggers who used the cove to ship in illegal booze during Prohibition.

Another one of Brian’s Favorites, McClure’s Beach is a secluded North Bay spot requiring a quick hike along a winding path. What you find at the end is one of the most hidden and special beaches in all of the Bay Area. Keep in mind, most Bay Area beaches are hardly tropical. The Pacific is a brisk 55 degrees, famous for her rip tides and yep, great white sharks.

Dill, Scallion & Gruyere Scones With Smoked Salmon And Crème Fraiche
Yield: about 12 3” scones

Ingredients
1 lb flour
1-1/2 tbs baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
4 oz cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
2 tbs chopped fresh dill, plus a few fronds for garnish
2 scallions, chopped
1-1/4 cups shredded gruyere + additional for garnish
2 cups heavy cream
Thinly sliced smoked salmon
1/3 cup crème fraiche

Directions
Preheat oven to 375F. Line a sheet pan with parchment or a silicone mat.
Combine flour, baking powder and salt in the bowl of a mixer. Mix with the paddle to blend.
Add the cold butter, and mix on low speed until butter is the size of peas.
Add dill, scallions and gruyere.
Turn mixer on low, and slowly add cream until dough starts to form.
Dump mixture on a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly to incorporate any dry bits and create a uniform dough.
Roll or pat to about a thickness of 1 inch. Using a 3 inch round cutter, cut out rounds. Pat scraps together, roll lightly and cut remaining circles. Only re-roll once.
Place rounds on sheet pan. Brush tops with cream, and sprinkle a little gruyere on top. 
Bake about 20 minutes, until golden brown. Allow to cool.
Split scones in half, spread a small amount of crème fraiche on one side, top with desired amount of smoked salmon. Top with other half. Place a small dollop of crème fraiche on top, and garnish with dill fronds.

Orange French Toast
Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients
8 slices day old Brioche, sliced about an inch thick
4 eggs
1/2; cup orange juice
Zest from one orange
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Pinch ground nutmeg
½ tsp vanilla
Clarified butter for frying
Powdered sugar for garnish
Warm Maple Syrup
Fresh berries

Directions

Heat oven to 200. Place a sheet pan in oven.
Whisk together eggs, orange juice, zest, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a shallow dish.
Heat a griddle of large skillet over medium heat. Add clarified butter, coating surface well.
Dip bread slices into egg mixture, turning to coat both sides.
Fry slices in batches, adding more butter when needed, until golden brown on both sides. Place slices in oven to keep warm.
Place two slices French toast on each plate. Dust with powdered sugar.
Serve, passing maple syrup and berries on the side.

Lemon Pudding Cakes With Fresh Berries
Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup sugar, divided
4 large eggs, separated
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup flour
2 oz unsalted butter, melted
Pinch salt
Fresh berries

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Butter and sugar 8 4-oz ramekins. Set ramekins in a 9X13 baking pan.
Whisk buttermilk, 1/2 cup sugar, egg yolks, lemon juice, flour, butter, and salt in a large bowl until smooth.
Using electric mixer, beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and beat to stiff peaks.
Using a whisk, gently fold buttermilk mixture into whites in 3 additions. Batter will be runny.
Pour batter into prepared ramekins. Pour enough hot water into pan halfway up sides of ramekins. Bake until tops are browned and cakes feel springy to touch, about 20-25 minutes.
Remove from baking pan. Cool completely on counter. Refrigerate until cold.
Combine a mixture of fresh berries in a small bowl. 
Run a thin knife around each cake. Invert ramekin on to a serving plate and unmold cake.
Top with fresh berries.
