California women’s basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb has received a two-year contract extension that takes her through the 2017-18 season after guiding the Golden Bears to the first Final Four appearance in program history.
Defending national champion Connecticut will make its return to Madison Square Garden to play Cal on Dec. 22 in the eighth annual women’s basketball doubleheader, the Maggie Dixon Classic.
There is no need for Lindsay Gottlieb to mention the Final Four every day. Sure, it’s on the minds of every one of her California players now that they are two victories from that elusive program first and a trip to the Big Easy.
Lindsay Gottlieb had already completed her morning run through the Oakland hills on a rainy fall day in the Bay Area. At her dining room table, laptop open, she crammed in some film study of California’s first workout before heading out for a jam-packed day of meetings, planning and practice.
Cal on Monday hired Gottlieb away from UC Santa Barbara to replace the departed Joanne Boyle, who accepted the Virginia job earlier this month.
