Owens was the first 49er to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season (1961). But he was best known for his “Alley Oop” leaping catch play. Off the field, he’ll be remembered for his community outreach, his charity work, and his positive attitude.
R.C. Owens, a longtime 49ers front office man and eight-year NFL wide receiver whose impressive leaping ability earned him the nickname “Alley Oop” and helped popularize the basketball phrase, died Sunday at age 77.
