California had the highest foreclosure rate in the country in July, a stark reminder that people are still losing their homes in record numbers despite state and federal efforts to end the housing crisis.
The foreclosure picture across the U.S. and the Bay Area is showing signs of improvement according to foreclosure database Realty Trac.
The real estate tracking firm RealtyTrac recorded a 17 percent increase in default notices in California during October, a sign the housing market has yet to hit bottom despite a marked improvement from 2010.
Initial foreclosure notices served across the U.S. were up 33 percent last month from July.
