Residents of a tiny mountain town breathed easier Friday after air tankers and helicopters blunted the run of a massive wildfire in Northern California just outside Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The Ponderosa Fire was 57 percent contained, with full containment expected early next week. But the blaze threatened 900 other homes Thursday as it burned a new front to the south.
Fire officials say dozens of buildings, many of them likely homes, have been destroyed in a fire burning outside the Northern California community of Manton.
