California Paid For Bridge Repairs While A Wind Farm Project Recouped Costs From Same Contractor, Same Flaws
The Chinese company that fabricated faulty sections of the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge had similar problems with some towers it manufactured for a massive wind farm in the North Sea. A Bay Area legislator now claims that Caltrans knew about cracks in that project, but didn’t do anything about it.
A Caltrans spokesman said Tuesday that non-standard weld connections that were used to hold road deck sections together on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge won’t affect the bridge’s performance during earthquakes.
The memo found that the pipeline that exploded in 2010 in San Bruno had a history of bad welding.
