The group behind the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (or SF MOMA) insist it is "dedicated to the idea that art and museums can transform lives" and aims to get others excited about and engaged in the world of art. The modern and contemporary art collection tops 26,000 pieces in paintings and sculpture, architecture and design, photography and media arts.
If you want to check out the exhibitions at SF MOMA on the cheap, admission is free the first Tuesday of every month and is half-price on Thursdays from 6 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.

The Asian Art Museum not only aims to expose and educate visitors about the art and culture from Asia, but also wants to get visitors actively involved in the subject. In addition to the permanent collection and changing exhibitions, the Asian Art Museum periodically screens films, offers free lectures, classes and workshops and more. The best time to visit the Asian Art Museum is during "Target First Free Sundays" on the first Sunday of every month when admission is free or deeply discounted for some areas of the museum.

Comic books, graphic novels, cartoons, video games -- the Cartoon Art Museum exhibits it all and more. Don't assume this place is just for kids -- or kids at heart. With more than 6,000 original pieces, regular lectures and classes and workshops, there's something for everybody. Although the general admission fee for the Cartoon Art Museum isn't steep, everyone likes a deal, right? First Toonsdays, the first Tuesday of every month, visitors pay whatever they would like.

The De Young Museum exhibits collections of American art from the 17th - 20th centuries but also showcases native American, Oceanic and African art. There are also special programs and events as well as instructional resources families, students and educations. The De Young also offers free admission the first Tuesday of every month (special exhibitions not included).

The Legion of Honor Museum, related to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, covers exhibitions in European painting and decorative art, ancient art and works on paper. As most other museums, the Legion of Honor offers free admission on the first Tuesday of every month, but special exhibition fees still apply.
