What’s even better at Gracias Madre, is that you can get your favorite Mexican dish, like this quesadilla, without any of the fattening dairy. This organic food is good, and good for you!”

“This is my favorite Mexican restaurant outside of Mexico (and maybe INSIDE Mexico, too). Great food, great margaritas, and really great people. My favorite dish…I’d say either the street tacos (the al pastor are my favorites), or maybe the Bistec al Cafe (sirloin marinated in tequila, grilled with chipotle and ground coffee). But my REAL favorite is the Top Shelf Margarita…these folks are serious about fresh juices and very good tequila.”

“…BY FAR the best Mexican restaurant around. It’s a somewhat small venue…but one that offers some great ambiance. When I’m there, I always go for the Beef Chimichanga. They also have the widest selection of tequillas that I have ever seen…and their margaritas are simply splendid.”

Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant

Aptos, CA 95003

“I know it’s a little far afield, but well worth the trip to Aptos, a few minutes south of Santa Cruz. In the little village area on the bluffs above Sea Cliff State Beach on Center Avenue is Manuel’s. It’s been a family restaurant since 1965 and has THE BEST, the fluffiest, the most flavorful Chile Rellenos one will ever find. And, to make it even more special, Manuel’s prepares a limited number of regional specialties…one each day of the week. Reserving one of these dishes rather than a table is the goal of locals who know this well… especially Friday nights for HUACHINANGO A LA JAROCHA and Saturday nights for CAMARONES DE DIEGO. The margaritas are darn good, too.”

“Great Yucatan cuisine. Everything is hand made and authentic by a husband – wife team. The Cochinita Pibil… slow cooked pork… is fantastic.”
