We’ve asked some of our CBS Radio On-Air Personalities what their absolute favorite dishes are! We asked “Where do they go for THE Very Best…?” In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, we asked “Where do you go for THE Very Best Mexican Dish?” Here’s what some of them had to say!

“When you are a vegetarian, going to a restaurant where you can eat ANYTHING on the menu without special ordering is great. What’s even better at Gracias Madre, is that you can get your favorite Mexican dish, like this quesadilla, without any of the fattening dairy. This organic food is good, and good for you!”

“This is my favorite Mexican restaurant outside of Mexico (and maybe INSIDE Mexico, too). Great food, great margaritas, and really great people. My favorite dish…I’d say either the street tacos (the al pastor are my favorites), or maybe the Bistec al Cafe (sirloin marinated in tequila, grilled with chipotle and ground coffee). But my REAL favorite is the Top Shelf Margarita…these folks are serious about fresh juices and very good tequila.”

“Run by the same family for decades and they know what they’re doing around a stove. The place is so crowded a lot of people phone ahead and take it home.”

“…BY FAR the best Mexican restaurant around. It’s a somewhat small venue…but one that offers some great ambiance. When I’m there, I always go for the Beef Chimichanga. They also have the widest selection of tequillas that I have ever seen…and their margaritas are simply splendid.”

Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant

“I know it’s a little far afield, but well worth the trip to Aptos, a few minutes south of Santa Cruz. In the little village area on the bluffs above Sea Cliff State Beach on Center Avenue is Manuel’s. It’s been a family restaurant since 1965 and has THE BEST, the fluffiest, the most flavorful Chile Rellenos one will ever find. And, to make it even more special, Manuel’s prepares a limited number of regional specialties…one each day of the week. Reserving one of these dishes rather than a table is the goal of locals who know this well… especially Friday nights for HUACHINANGO A LA JAROCHA and Saturday nights for CAMARONES DE DIEGO. The margaritas are darn good, too.”

“Great Yucatan cuisine. Everything is hand made and authentic by a husband – wife team. The Cochinita Pibil… slow cooked pork… is fantastic.”

I’m surprised no one mentioned the Acupulco Restaurant on Lincoln in Alameda. Established in late 50’s or 60’s by same family running it now; frequented by locals and outlying areas. I’ve met people from Stockton and Sacramento who drove here just for dinner.

One ‘reviewer’ said ““Cheese are hella f’in good, rice is really, really good.”

It’s really hard to give ANY consideration at all to such an illiterate opinion…so I don’t. You can get cheese at Safeway and rice – well, rice is rice. Hardly something to rave about.

I enjoy the food AND service at Celia’s in Berkeley. Huge portions, served piping hot and everything on the menu is delicious!

rice is not rice. please do the research before you make a comment about something you too are ignorant about.
Its like saying: cheese is cheese. there are many varieties of cheese out there. hmm..

  • Menace Not Cool

White Menace would list more than one place. Fatty.

La Victoria in San Jose has mediocre food. The only thing that makes their burritos seems amazing is their orange sauce which is made from Chorizo Fat hence the orange color. There are many great places to go for burritos in the South Bay…I would recommend Los Charros in Mountain View. Their Carne Asada Super Burrito is enormous and uses fresh ingredients as well as their ham breakfast burrito. Being born and bred in the south bay at 27 years of age, La Victoria is only amazing when your drunk and its 2am and nothing else is open.

Aww…leave White Menace alone…He’s got a great show on Live 105, plus he and everyone else is entitled to their opinion. And I have to agree with him, La Vic’s is pretty good. But my favorite is Tacos El Grullense in Redwood City.

Try Picante Cocina Mexicana in Berkeley. It’s on 6th just south of Gilman. Great fresh food, good service and hand crafted beer on tap.
