The South Bay’s wine region stretches from Gillroy to Half Moon Bay and boasts over 70 wineries. Explore the hidden and under-recognized region as we road trip to historical wineries and pop in to on some surprising newcomers to the wine scene.

The land for this 120-acre winery perched above Saratoga has been in the family for over 100 years. The vintners produce seven tasty varietals, and put an emphasis on sustainability. The tasting room charges a $5 fee, with bottle prices starting at $22. The country setting is also fabulous for a pick nick.

Just down the road from the better-known Mountain Winery, the barn that houses the Savannah-Chanelle tasting room is coming up on its 100th birthday. The grounds also include a picturesque villa and stunning views. The winery regularly treats visitors with a spread of food to sample while they swirl their glasses. The tasting fee is $10.

Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming and husband Greg Jenkins began growing chardonnay on the hills above Los Gatos over a decade ago and fell in love with the winemaking process. That passion eventually led to a small tasting room that’s a must-stop attraction on a shopping trip to downtown Los Gatos. Tastings start at $5.

Located in a 150-plus year old schoolhouse, this tasting room is a great place to further your wine education. The staff is happy to pour many of the varietals that grow in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tasting fee is $5.

This picturesque winery is a great backdrop to snap photos of your outing. The traditional tasting room serves up some worthy selections starting at $5 for a tasting flight. Byington is also a popular location for group events.
