Last Minute Reprieve for Three SJ Pools

SAN JOSE (KCBS) --The long hot summer won't be quite as bad in San Jose, after three city pools which had been slated for closure were able to open after all this week.

Because pools can be a drain on city resources, San Jose was able to keep the pools open by outsourcing operations to a private company, saving the city $600,000.

"A lot of families cannot afford big venues like Great America and Raging Waters," said Dianne Carroll, who brought six kids to the city's Fair Swim Center. "They're great places, but sometimes they're just not reachable. Times are hard right now, and we need a place where we can keep the kids busy and keep the kids having fun."
