Teen Booked in Tourist's Death

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) --Police have booked and charged a San Francisco teenager with the shooting death of a German tourist Sunday night near Union Square.

Phillip Stewart, 18, of San Francisco is facing murder charges in a shootout that also left two others wounded, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department said.

The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. in the 400 block of Mason Street. When officers arrived, they found a large crowd in the area and three people who had been shot, police said.

Mechthild Schroeer, a 50-year-old resident of Minden, Germany, died from her injuries. A 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Both are expected to survive, police said.

Police detained five suspects after witnesses provided officers with descriptions of the shooters.

Stewart was one of those suspects.

The other four, two juveniles and two adults, have been released pending further investigation, San Francisco police officer Samson Chan said.

The shooting appears to have begun as an altercation in the area, Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said. The victims are not believed to have been the intended targets, he said.
