North Bay High School Holds Concussion Screenings

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KCBS)_ Tamalpais High School held its fourth concussion screening, the exact same test given in the NFL. Dozens of high school students in the North Bay are going through testing that could help them if they ever suffer concussions.

Among those there was just graduated quarterback Alex Ritchie who suffered a concussion just before his team was to be in the playoffs.

Ritchie missed a month and now says that he's ditching football and has been cleared to play baseball in college.

"When I told my dad that I didn't want to pursue football in college and that I wanted to pursue baseball, he was actually happy with my decision," says Ritchie.

He cited health reasons and how brutal football is as his main deciding factors.

Doctors say females suffer more concussions than males and take longer to recover when it comes to sports-related injuries.

The screenings take place just months after 16-year-old pitcher Gunnar Sandberg of Marin Catholic High School was hospitalized after being struck in the head by a line drive.
