School Holds Special Blood Drive

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KCBS) _ Students at Santa Clara High School rolled up their sleeves on Wednesday to give blood for an alum.

They lined up to donate blood for Officer Todd Young, a 1989 graduate who was shot last week in Oakland. 16-year-old Jinoo Jain said he felt compelled to donate.

"I want to show my respect to Officer Young and the brave other police officers that risk their lives everyday to try to keep our community safe," said Jain. "And I also want to help out Stanford Blood Center because they always need blood to give to patients in need."

Principal Dave Grissom said there was a special meaning to this drive.

"You here about these things that happen all the time, but this one hit home," he said. "It hit home for the staff and the faculty. It's hit home for the community. Officer Young has two children in Santa Clara Unified School District."

While he's not out of the woods yet, doctors say Officer Young's condition is improving.

He was shot twice by a suspected gang member last week while serving a search warrant in Oakland.
