Kids Bumped From Overbooked Schools

NOVATO, Calif. (KCBS) _ Some children in Novato are getting bumped from their over-enrolled schools, even though the school year started just two weeks ago.

Some 30 to 40 students are having to move to new schools, and many parents like Terri Moran are not pleased.

"What frustrates me is the fact that they did it after the fact and not before school started," she said. "I wouldn't have liked it either way. I just bought a home here to have my child in the neighborhood school so she could make friends here. This kind of disrupts that."

Complicating matters is the fact that Moran's daughter is an adopted foster child and suffers from reactive attachment disorder, making it more difficult to make and keep friends.

"They had 100 new registrants in the district," said Moran. "I think a lot of people are moving to Novato. It's more affordable if you want to buy something than certainly living in southern Marin, which is where I came from."

In order to qualify for maximum funding, districts must keep a certain student-to-teacher ratio.

District officials overbooked several elementary schools as they tried to ensure class sizes of 20 students in K-3 classrooms.
