CHP Dog Honored For Helping Nab Suspect In East Bay
OAKLAND (BCN) -- A police canine with the California Highway Patrol received one of the agency's commissioner's awards in Oakland Wednesday for its role in taking a suspect into custody following a vehicle pursuit earlier this year, a CHP spokesman said.
"Dax" was part of the K9 unit requested when a pursuit began in Emeryville in the early morning hours of Jan. 16 after a vehicle failed to yield to a traffic enforcement stop by a CHP officer on westbound Interstate 80 near Powell Street, Sgt. Trent Cross said Wednesday.
The pursuit moved from the highway onto city streets in Oakland, where the suspect eventually fled on foot. The canine officer, Greg Eddy, deployed Dax, who spotted the male suspect jumping over a residential fence and trying to get into a home through a locked back door, Cross said.
Eddy ordered the suspect to stop and show his hands, but he refused. Dax was then directed to engage the suspect.
Dax took hold of the suspect's right arm, causing him to drop to the ground and roll onto his stomach. The suspect then again tried to flee, but Dax grasped again onto his left calf. The suspect finally surrendered, and Dax returned to his handler's side.
Dax, who is still with the CHP, was awarded for his actions at a ceremony in Oakland Wednesday that featured his handler Eddy, Teresa Becher, chief of the CHP's Golden Gate Division, and several other officials, Cross said.
The canine unit was given a commissioner's award, one of many given out by the CHP for a variety of categories each year.
Dax also got a special doggie biscuit, Cross said.
