Fire Torches Richmond School Cafeteria

RICHMOND (BCN) - Firefighters battled a second-alarm blaze at a Richmond high school that broke out early Friday morning in the school's cafeteria, Richmond fire Chief Michael Banks said.

Word of the fire reached the department at 1:24 a.m., and crews from the Richmond, El Cerrito, and Pinole fire departments and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to De Anza High School at 5000 Valley View Road.

Crews had the fire, which was confined to the cafeteria's kitchen, completely under control by about 2:15 a.m., Banks said.

A preliminary investigation has yet to be conducted, Banks said, but he estimated the fire caused approximately $500,000 in damage to the school.

Regularly scheduled classes for Friday shouldn't be disrupted by the damage, Banks said, "There just won't be use of the cafeteria."
