4 Bay Area Animal Shelters Offering $10 Cat Adoptions

SAN JOSE (BCN) -- Bay Area animal shelters are offering cat adoptions at considerably reduced prices during November due in part to the sluggish economy.

Humane Society Silicon Valley has partnered with three other Bay Area shelters to offer cats and kittens for $10 -- compared to the usual $100 to $175 fee—until the end of November.

"The economy has definitely created a trend we are seeing when people are surrendering their animals," said Laura Fulda, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit.

"People have made a decision to move because they can no longer afford to live where they are living and their new landlord won't let them have a pet."

The shelter has about 220 cats, which is a reduced number from last year, Fulda said. But the organization is still having trouble moving the older cats.

"People come into shelters and they're looking for very young cats or kittens, and we've got 8- and 10-year-old cats," she said.

Still, $10 is a bargain no matter the age of the cat, spokeswoman Kelly Grant said.

"People are getting a cat that's spayed, neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and medically evaluated for behavior and medical health," she said.

The shelter also has a number of kittens, which is unusual this time of year.

"In my seven and a half years at HSSV, I can't remember a time we've seen this many kittens well into November," Fulda said.

Families considering adoption can browse animals at the center at 901 Ames Ave. in Milpitas.

They can also go to one of the other three participating shelters: the city of San Jose Animal Care and Services at 2750 Monterey Road in San Jose, the city of Palo Alto Animal Services shelter at 3281 East Bayshore Road in Palo Alto, and Town Cats of Morgan Hill in Santa Clara County, which can be reached at (408) 779-5761.
