San Francisco Supes Decide How To Pick Newsom's Replacement

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― San Francisco supervisors were meeting late Tuesday afternoon to vote on whether to begin the selection process for outgoing Mayor Gavin Newsom's replacement.

Newsom plans to resign his post sometime in January to become California's lieutenant governor.

A replacement can't be formally named until Newsom officially steps down, but three supervisors proposed naming a replacement with an advisory vote now, then ratifying the selection after he resigns.

The proposal to start the selection process now may not garner the necessary six votes to go through.

If the 11-member Board of Supervisors fails to select an interim mayor after Newsom resigns, the board president, David Chiu, would be automatically appointed.
