Oakland Boy Gives Back To The Community

WEST OAKLAND (KCBS) -- A 13-year-old Oakland boy, who received a liver transplant two years ago, spent his Thanksgiving morning handing out free meals in West Oakland.

Michael Carraway's liver failed two years ago. But he was fortunate to receive a transplant from an 18-year-old in Southern California.

"Because of what he gave to me and the fact that his family lost their son, I just wanted to feed the homeless because their son died," Carraway said.

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

His mother, Shaheda Wright, said in the beginning, they made 25 meals and fed people from the trunk of her car.

"We did that for a few months and then our volunteers grew so much," she said. "We couldn't drive around anymore. Our caravan turned to 20 cars, so we had to find a spot. We found a convenient spot in the neighborhood, a spot where a lot of people need help."

Wright said she asked her son what he wanted for Christmas in 2008, shortly after he received his transplant. His reply was to "feed the homeless" which they have been doing ever since.

Last year, Mikey's Meals fed more than 1,100 people in the city of Oakland.
