Clayton Hair Salon Fire Ruled Arson

CLAYTON (BCN) -- A hair salon in Clayton was destroyed by a fire that appears to have been intentionally set late Thursday night, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District marshal said today.

The fire was reported around 5 p.m. at Hair By Jim, located in the 6000 block of Main Street, Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said.

Firefighters arrived in the area a few minutes later and saw fire coming out of the one-story building. They were able to extinguish it by 5:14 p.m., Broschard said.

An investigator determined the fire started outside the salon near a bench adjacent to the building. The fire then spread into the building, causing major damage inside, he said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set, but Broschard did not know what was found at the scene that led to that determination.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities will be interviewing additional witnesses in the next few days.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact the fire district's investigation unit at (925) 941-9140.
