San Jose Police Honors Two Officers As Cuts Loom

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – San Jose police honored two of their own on Tuesday, but the recipients of the new Top Cop award are not immune to potential department cuts.

Officers Frank Hagg and Nick Bronte are the first recipients of a new recognition in San Jose, the cop's cop award, which honors excellent police work.

The two officers arrested a suspected gang member, who may have been en route to a drive-by shooting in December and also apprehended a suspect in the city's most recent homicide.

"It feels great to be recognized by my peers, by the POA, by the chief," said Hagg. "It's really an honor, a great honor."

KCBS' Matt Bigler:

The Police Officers' Association chose to honor Hagg and Bronte at a time when as many as 200 officers could be cut from the department due to budget cuts.  Both Hagg and Bronte are at risk because they have been on the job for only three years.

"I try not to think about the politics. I try not to think about the things that are going on with the budget," said Hagg. "I try to just focus on the citizens and doing good police work."

San Jose Police Chief Chris Moore said he is working with the city manager and city council to keep as many cops on the force as possible.
