Oakland Man Sentenced For Beating Dog With Crowbar
OAKLAND (AP) - An Oakland man convicted of beating his dog with a crowbar and ax handle has been sentenced to four years in prison with no chance of parole.
The sentencing of Charles Black by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Allan Hymer on Wednesday was hailed by animal welfare advocates, who praised the district attorney for pursuing the case.
A jury convicted Black on Jan. 12 of two counts of felony animal cruelty after neighbors allegedly videotaped him beating his pit bull on two occasions.
Prosecutors said the footage shows the animal lying down and yelping after each strike. It suffered bruises and lacerations.
The animal has recovered from its injuries and been adopted by a new family.
