9 Petaluma Drivers Arrested Over Weekend, Including 6 During DUI Checks

PETALUMA (CBS SF) -- The Petaluma Police Department arrested nine drivers, including six during sobriety and driver's license checkpoints, over the weekend, police said.

During the two checkpoints, Petaluma police arrested Roger Brians, 36, from Penngrove, for driving under the influence, and Rosa Newman, 46, from Santa Rosa, for having an outstanding warrant for driving under the influence, police said.

Two others were arrested for driving without a license and one driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license, authorities said.

The first checkpoint screened drivers traveling south on Old Redwood Highway at North McDowell Extension between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday.

The second checkpoint was located in both directions on Petaluma Boulevard South near the U.S. Highway 101 interchange from 10 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday.

Out of 909 vehicles that traveled through the two checkpoints, 24 drivers were directed out of the line for further investigations, where six arrests were made.

Petaluma police officers not assigned to the checkpoints also arrested three others for driving under the influence: Thomas Verdu, 49, from Petaluma; Brock Bacon, 23, from Novato; and Joshua Collum, 29, a motorcyclist from Petaluma.

Additional checkpoints are planned throughout the remainder of the year, police said.

These operations are conducted to raise awareness of driving under the influence by educating motorists and arresting impaired drivers, according to Petaluma police.

Funding for these operations have been provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
