SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – It’s bad enough finding out that one of your passwords may have been stolen, but imagine if all of them were compromised. That’s what some users of Last Pass, a password manager, are going through right now.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid Comments:
Last Pass is a system where users sign in with one password and then the system remembers other passwords as the users type them into protected sites, such as banking or social networking sites. The system also memorizes your credit card information.
”So if you think about it, Last Pass servers have a lot of very critical information,” said KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid, who admits he’s a Last Pass user himself. “They’ve got your credit card information, your passwords and your user names, so when they suffer a data breach it’s a little frightening.”
Magid said that the good news is that not much information was stolen in the breech, and if you had a good password to get into Last Pass it’s unlikely that someone broke into your system in the first place.
Last Pass has gone out of its way to tout its encryption, but Magid said that it wasn’t impenetrable. He said that it’s still a very safe site.
”People can avoid living in houses with glass windows, or avoid carrying their wallet in their pocket – where do you draw the line? There are so many things we can do to protect ourselves and live a very miserable life,” said Magid. “My attitude is that you should have good strong passwords, but there’s always some risk we take in life, but that’s one of the reasons it’s worth living.”
