ATM Stolen From Marin County Market, 2 Arrested

MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Authorities in Marin County have arrested two men in connection with the theft of an ATM in Santa Venetia early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff's deputies went to the Santa Venetia Market, located at 71 San Pablo Ave., around 12:45 a.m. after a newspaper distributor discovered while making his delivery that the front door of the market was broken, Lt. Barry Heying said.

The thieves had apparently smashed the glass door and removed the ATM from inside the store, Heying said.

Around 3 a.m., San Rafael police learned that the ATM had been taken to a house in the 800 block of Patricia Way in Terra Linda, Heying said.

San Rafael police and sheriff's deputies went to the home and arrested 19-year-old Stephen Hart, of Novato, Heying said.

A second suspect, Benjamin Otanez, 20, of San Rafael, escaped from a window at the back of the house, Heying said.

Otanez was captured around 9:30 a.m. after he was found walking on a hillside near Lucas Valley Road and Mt. Shasta Drive, wearing only shorts and socks, Heying said.

Hart was booked into Marin County Jail for burglary and possessing stolen property, and Otanzez was booked for possessing stolen property and resisting or obstructing officers, Heying said.
