2 Arrested In Oakland Mother Burning Body Case

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Oakland police said Tuesday that they are seeking to have murder charges filed against two men they believe are responsible for the death of a woman whose burned body was found in the city's Rockridge neighborhood last week.

Sgt. Holly Joshi said the two men were arrested in the 4800 block of MacArthur Boulevard at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday and were being interviewed by homicide investigators.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"We're confident they're responsible for the murder" of 21-year-old Monica Rodas of Union City, Joshi said.

Rodas' body was found at about 4:40 a.m. on July 14 at Ivanhoe and Chabot roads in Oakland. She appeared to have suffered trauma before her body was burned, police said.

The men are being held at the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland while the Alameda County District Attorney's Office reviews the case and decides whether to charge them, Joshi said. Charges might not be filed until Thursday, she said.

Joshi said one of the suspects is a 21-year-old Oakland man and the other is a 30-year-old Oakland man but she declined to release their names until charges are filed.

She didn't disclose a possible motive for Rodas' killing.
