New San Francisco Muni Head Starts Job With Plenty To Work On

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The new head of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is spending the first day on the job going through a laundry list of things to do.

Even though he has no transit experience, Ed Reiskin has headed the Department of Public Works since 2008, overseeing an agency with a huge budget and major capital projects ongoing.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Among his major tasks at Muni, he'll have to deal with safety, on-time performance and a driver's union that rejected a contract that was eventually imposed on them.

"I think (it's important) to make sure that I and the rest of the management team can restore and build trust and hear what their concerns are," Reiskin said.

Muni also oversees San Francisco's parking policy, traffic management, taxi regulation and pedestrian and bicycle programs.

Reiskin doesn't have a car and he and his family rely heavily on Muni and other modes of transportation to get around San Francisco.
