(CBS 5) – A pro football team is one unit, with some highly paid athletes. In this Good Question: How does football’s salary cap work?

ANSWER: According to Raiders coach Hue Jackson, the 2011 NFL salary cap is $120 million. That means that NFL teams may pay out up to that amount per season.

But some of the salaries are “back loaded” or deferred to future seasons where they are only counted when the player is actually paid. NFL teams are not permitted to pay out more than the cap allows.
