Oakland City Council President Proposes Curfews To Stop Violence

OAKLAND (KCBS) --- The president of the Oakland City Council plans to introduce a proposal for a citywide youth curfew to help stop what he calls the out of control gun violence in the city, but Mayor Jean Quan is already voicing opposition to the plan.

There have been 71 homicides in Oakland this year compared to 56 at this time last year and shootings are up 33 percent.

After the shooting of three-year-old Carlos Nava on International Blvd. earlier this month, City Council Preisdent Larry Reid renewed calls for a curfew as well as calls for extending the controversial gang injunctions to East Oakland.

KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:

"The violence in this city is just getting off the charts," Reid said. "If we continue to do nothing, we will continue to lose an incredible number of young African Americans and young Latinos to violence on the streets."

Quan said she believes in injunctions against individuals, not neighborhoods. She added she doesn't support citywide curfews because of civil rights issues.

"I'm willing to work with the council," Quan said.
