The man, identified as 20-year-old San Pablo resident Jesus Paredes Rodriguez, was allegedly seen conducting a drug deal before pointing a gun at officers during a chase on Broadway St. police said.

The officers, who were on foot patrol, spotted a person they believed to be wanted by police around 2 a.m. on the 400 block of Broadway, said Lt. Troy Dangerfield. As they approached the suspect, they saw him allegedly conduct a narcotics transaction, Dangerfield said.

When the suspect saw the officers approaching, he fled on foot south on Broadway. The suspect reached into his waistband and produced a semi-automatic pistol, which he allegedly pointed at the pursuing officers.

The officers fired, but did not hit the suspect. Instead, they struck two bystanders, a man and a woman.

The woman, who was hit in the thigh, was treated at San Francisco General Hospital and has been released, Dangerfield said. The man, who was struck in the lower leg, was still in the hospital as of  Saturday afternoon. Both their injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The suspect, who was uninjured in the shooting, was taken into custody at the scene and booked on weapons charges. Police also recovered his weapon, which was found to be fully loaded and functional.

The suspect did not fire his gun during the incident, Dangerfield said.

Police planned to hold a community meeting to share information about the shooting in the North Beach area on Monday, but have not yet set an exact time or location, Dangerfield said.

Police did not have information available about how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many rounds were fired.
