SF Officials Propose Free Muni Rides For Youth

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) - San Francisco officials are urging the city's transportation agency to let kids under 18 ride public transit for free.

A Board of Supervisors' committee backed a measure on Thursday that calls on the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the San Francisco Unified School District to fund the program.

It would cost at least $5.8 million a year.

Supervisor David Campos, the measure's chief sponsor, said free public transit for kids would help families save money.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

But City Transportation chief Ed Reiskin said the cash-strapped Municipal Transportation Agency has no extra money.

The measure now goes to the full Board of Supervisors. Supervisors do not have the authority to require free Muni service.
