Daily Madden: Jason Campbell Is The Loser In Palmer Trade

OAKLAND (KCBS) - After leading his team to a 4-2 record, Jason Campbell may have played his last game as a Raider. Following Campbell's injury in Sunday's game, the Raiders traded for QB Carson Palmer.

"Jason Campbell is a good guy," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "He just seemed to be getting comfortable. Then (injuries) happens, and his contract is up. And then you bring Carson Palmer in. And it's not only draft choices, but it's also salary cap room. You're not going to have room for both, so that's probably the end of Jason Campbell as a Raider."

Is Palmer the answer for the Raiders?

"That's the thing with this trade is which Carson Palmer are you getting," Madden said. "I thought he was one of the best quarterbacks in all of football, and I thought the Bengals were going to go to the Super Bowl. And then he hurt his knee (in 2006). When he came back after the knee injury, I don't think he was ever the same."

But John said that doesn't mean he can't lead the Raiders to the playoffs.

"The Raiders are really a running team, and I've always said the best friend of a quarterback is a good running game," Madden said. "He's just a piece of the puzzle; he's not the whole puzzle."

Madden said Raiders management did not consult him about the trade.

"No, I'm not one (who was consulted.) I'm not taking credit or blame for this." (8:40)
