Black Friday Shooting Sparks Safety Reminder

SAN LEANDRO (KCBS) -- San Leandro Police Sergeant Mike Sobek said if you're confronted with a robbery, the best decision is to just give them what they want in order to save your life.

A Black Friday shopper is in critical, but stable condition after being shot by armed robbers outside a Walmart store in San Leandro early Friday morning.

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

One man is in custody, and investigators are reviewing store surveillance video, hoping to identify at least three other suspects.

Police are calling the Black Friday shooting a wake up call as you prepare to go Christmas shopping.

"Some people forget about that and attach themselves so much that they can get hurt for it," said Sobek.

"Fortunately the young shooting victim was not alone", Sobek said, adding that it's good to shop with a group if possible.

"I think you need to get in, get out and put your stuff in the trunk of the car," he said. That way you don't make it easy to become a victim.

Sobek said there were extra officers from his department patrolling that very Walmart as well as Bayfair Mall.

"These guys wait and see where we're at and try to go to the opposite end and unfortunately this happened at that time," Sobek explained.
