Oakland's Plan to Keep A's Called 'Last Ditch Effort'

OAKLAND (KCBS)— Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone understands why Oakland Mayor Jean Quan sent a letter to Major League Baseball Friday stating her city has two viable sites to choose for a new stadium for the A's.

"Mayor Quan, I'm sure with her failing popularity, doesn't want to add to her problems by being the mayor that lost the Oakland A's to San Jose," Stone said dismissively.

KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:

Stone, a prominent supporter of bringing the team to San Jose, called Quan's offer of a downtown, waterfront stadium or a new Coliseum stadium, a last-ditch, too-late effort and that after four mayors and two changes of ownership, Oakland has failed to make a commitment to the A's.

"The issue is not Oakland, the issue is Major League Baseball, and there are great signs, real signs that MLB will very soon announce that they will allow the A's to move to San Jose," Stone added.

Stone said the A's situation is officially on the agenda for the baseball league's January meeting.

Many close to the deal expect the league at that time to give the team permission to work with San Jose.
