Tech Report: Apps Downloaded By The Millions

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – It was a record-breaking Christmas for Android and Apple users, who smashed the record for app downloads in a day.

Mobile analytics company Flurry said there were almost a quarter of a billion downloads on Christmas Day, which is more than double any other day in history.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said the numbers are astounding.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:

"It seems like apps are really how you take advantage of your iPhone, your iPad or your Android phone. This is a way you empower these devices," Magid said.

He said the model behind apps is gaining steam because most of them cost users less than a dollar.

"The price is right even if you have to pay. There are a lot of free apps that use advertising," said Magid. "Or some are just given away because they promote another product."

Magid said that he doesn't believe the app marketplace will bottom out anytime soon as more and more devices are running them, not to mention the popularity of smartphones and tablets continues to grow.

You can hear Larry Magid's Tech Report Monday through Friday at 3:50pm on KCBS All News 740AM and 106.9FM.
